cup holder will not click closed

this has got to be about the least critical problem a JC owner can have but.... when the cup hold sticks out it blocks the seats from pivoting and it will certainly get completely smashed soon.

setting up for summer use (I especially liked the pencil blocking the bench seat from sliding all the way back ) I notice my cup holder will not now click closed.

does anyone know how the closing mechanism works (so that I might troubleshoot) or how to even remove the unit so I can investigate or replace (or. just remove it)

and Lo and Behold! it clicked closed yesterday
It's a miracle. the van healed itself.
